Uncovering Hidden Glutens
The Successful Celiac's Guide

Posted on 11:03 am by Gluten Free Guy

Everything we consume is a possible gluten bomb! Sorry about that! Here are some of the traps that we need to sidestep. Good luck!

Drugstore Items. Glutens lurk in places where we least expect them. Fortunately, Walgreens publishes a list of all the gluten free items in their stores. The list is pretty technical and certainly not designed for use by the general public. However, a celiac who used that list to “find clues” would be in an excellent position to get answers from store personnel. I could not find an equivalent list at CVS Pharmacy or Rite-Aid.

Tea. Tea is naturally gluten free, of course, but it may become toxic to us if wheat paste is used to seal the tea bag. It’s hard to find answers here, since the wheat is part of the packaging material and not officially an ingredient. I hope that one of you can advise me of tea bags that are OK for us; I’d love to republish the information.Send me an e-mail at gfceliac@gmail.com.

Toothpaste. After the tea bag non-answer, I thought that you would be relieved to know that both Colgate and Crest declare on the sites that their products are gluten free.

Licorice. I used licorice for several years before realizing that most licorice is gluten toxic. Click on the pictures below if you wish to order gluten free licorice from The Gluten Free Pantry:

Running Rabbit - Black Cherry Licorice

Orgran - Molasses Licorice

Flavoring Syrup. My morning starts with at least one cup of flavored coffee, so I was glad to learn that all DaVinci Brand syrups (with the exception of “dolce de leche sugar free”) is gluten free.

Sushi. It is possible to prepare a gluten free version of virtually anything. Is it worth the effort, or is best for us simply to avoid that particular food? My article "Gluten Free Sushi" may be the most controversial thing I have ever posted. Here is a link to another article that seems to lead to a different conclusion. Since i am not a sushi enthusiast, I"ll let you make up your own mind.

I wish I could tell you that this list is finished, but it isn’t.. I’m not sure that a complete lists exists or can exist. Please help us out by letting me know what needs to be added here. E-mail me at gfceliac@gmail.com or leave a comment at the end of any of my articles.
