“Gluten free diets are the new black. They are a bit mysterious and sexy with hints of secret benefits.” Congratulations to The Miami Herald for summarizing the situation so elegantly. These two sentences have been reproduced too-many-times-to-count on the internet, but few have tried to tackle the key questions: How on earth did this happen? What (if anything) should we do about it? Since there are so few facts available, here are some personal opinions:
~~~> 1. When I was diagnosed in 1999, the gluten free diet was considered a life-long commitment. This concept is no longer in favor.
~~~> 2. People lose weight because they burn more calories than they consume. Many people are looking for a simpler solution. The gluten free diet is today’s panacea of choice.
~~~> 3. All factors being equal, it seems reasonable to consume the food choice that contains the least gluten.
~~~> 4. The search engines choose the most the most popular terms. Only a human can judge which terms are most accurate and useful. The term ‘gluten free diet’ will be with us for a long time.
