Gluten Free Goes to College

0 Comments 20 August 2012

Choosing an appropriate college or university is a celiac’s first step in a ‘safe’ college career. Here are the results of a survey 25 colleges and universities. Officials at 25 colleges and universities submitted specific information about what they are willing and able to do to help guarantee a successful college experience for students who live gluten free. For more information, read this article titled “Fourteen Colleges that Cater to Gluten Free Students“.

This website offers a general overview of the college scene and gives potential students opportunity to download a free e-book called “Four Steps to a Better Life With Celiac Disease“.

Finding the ‘right’ university is challenging at best. A student’s gluten free lifestyle introduces additional factors. Consider these questions:

  • Does the food service staff seem capable, approachable,  and willing to assist?
  • Are microwave ovens and small refrigerators allowed in the dormitories? The gluten free student will want to prepare some of his or her own meals.
  • Are inexpensive restaurants that provide gluten free menus available in the area? Click here to find a list of appropriate restaurants.
  • Are there suitable food stores in the area? The gluten free student should be able to walk from his or her dormitory and return carrying a bag of food. Click here for a list of supermarkets that provide gluten free shopping guides.
