“You’ve got abdominal pains, bloating, fatigue, and foggy thinking. You feel worse after eating wheat or other foods with gluten, and better when you avoid them … Is it wheat allergy, celiac disease or the power of suggestion … or might it be an ailment medicine doesn’t officially recognize yet?” The Wall Street Journal asked these questions recently. The only honest answer to this question, in my opinion, is “Yes, it could be any or all of these things”.
An international group of experts has proposed a new classification system for medical disorders related to gluten. The article I quoted above does a fine job of explaining their thinking.
Cynthia Kupfer, a celiac and the executive director of the Gluten Intolerance Group, proposes a solution to the practical problem of what people can do when they experience the symptoms mentioned in the first paragraph. I will not try to explain her strategy. The article explains her approach very clearly.
