I recently enjoyed a great family meal at Red Robin. My waiter brought me their gluten free menu, a copy of what is available on-line and is up-dated monthly. I ordered a guacamole burger served protein style (which includes the burger with a large lettuce wedge instead of a bun. A suggestion: always order protein-style burgers well-done — the lettuce wedge and the napkin covering the burger are not nearly as good as a bun for soaking up grease. Protein-style burgers are messy at best!).
The menu I received started out with a full page disclaimer printed in red and in bold type. I sometimes wonder if these disclaimers are written by lawyers of by dietitians, but I appreciate Red Robin’s honesty in showing it to me. Since the menu said nothing about the fries being safe, I did not partake of the ones that were brought to the table. In researching this write-up, I noticed some three-year old posts stating that Red Robin’s fries were safe. Perhaps things have changed. I was glad to have up-to-date information.

I once spoke with a manager at Red Robin who was very open about explaining their special menu and procedures.
Managers in the region meet regularly to discuss special dietary needs and possible changes on the menu and in procedures.
RR does use a dedicated fryer for fries, but or manager couldn’t guarantee it had not been cross contaminated by negligent cooks throwing something else in the oil if they were behind in the kitchen
I’ve eaten at Red Robin several times now that I’ve been off gluten and have had a chance to talk with the wait staff about the fries. Once I was told they were cooked with other items that contained gluten, and I refrained. Another time, the waitress said she would ask to have them cooked in a dedicated fryer. Also, either she told me or I read some where that the seasoning they add right out of the fryer _might_ contain gluten, so they did not add that to my fries.
It’s the grill I’d worry about. Many gluten containing items are toasted on the grill, or just plain cooked there (soy related or other sauce marinated meats). That contaminates ALL that’s cooked on that grill.
when I walk in a place, and they say “what?” when I ask if they have any gluten free items on their menu, ~~despite what’s on their website, I turn around and don’t come back.
I’m not that addicted to restaurants.
After all, even 25 yrs ago, a restaurant meal was considered special. Whole families did NOT eat out there, often. Why must we today?
Red robin is not a gluten free friendly place. As I type this I’m watching my family eat because I refuse to pay 7 bucks for wilted lettuce.
I ate at Red Robin of South Plainfield. I ordered the Guac Burger (Gluten free according to the website) I was with coworkers and I choose not to tell the waiter about my problems with gluten. I was sick for 3 days. WTF. I had no fries, I had a guac burger, side salad and bal vin dressing. Cross contamination or the dressing was f’ed. Not sure but I will never go back agian. I HAD TO LEAVE WORK EARLY.
Bad experience here. I ordered off of the gf menu (which is decent in size) a salad that said to be gf to leave off the blue cheese crumbles and side bread. I explained this to the waiter and watched him write it down. Salad came with blue cheese. I told the boy that brought it out that i needed it without blue cheese because it needed to be gf. I even specifically said that it needed to be a new salad, not just the cheese picked out. He said he would notify the waiter. When our waiter finally brought my salad out again, he told me i need not worry, hehad removed all of the blue cheese as requested. Yes, he had picked through my salad (ewww)and i am SURE he got every single piece out between the lettuce leaves… I explained, again, that it needed to be a new salad with no gluten to which he responded “you mean it can’t even touch your food?” By the time my salad came out the third time, my family was finished eating. Sad to say, the salad was definitely not even worth waiting for.
