The Recession and the Gluten Free Experience

Comments Off 12 May 2009

“How is the current economic situation affecting your gluten free lifestyle?” I asked that question in my newsletter a few weeks ago and received two replies. I have published both of them in this article. Both writers were adamant about not deviating from the gluten free diet. I agree totally. I disagree with one point by the writer of the first letter: WE DO HAVE CHOICES and it is my mission as a gluten free blogger to help point them out. We can’t deviate from the gluten free diet provides both our nourishment and our medication but we can strive to minimize the financial cost of meeting those needs.

I am retired from the federal government so I am practically recession-proof. I own two rental properties and so far I have had no problems finding renters. I am blessed. The number of people visiting this blog has remained steady during the last few months — it had been growing steadily prior to that. My visitors continue to visit my advertiser’s websites but are purchasing less from them. I’m not sure what those statistics prove, but I thought you might be interested.

I plan to continue my practice of asking questions in my newsletters and then publishing the answers on the blog in order to give them the widest possible audience. If you’re interested in my newsletter, use the box in the sidebar to sign up. I’ll continue to publish your letters as long as interest continues.

LETTER #1: ‘I wish gluten free products were more cost friendly but they are not so, in today’s economy I have no choice but to continue to buy the products I need at the standard higher cost then non-specialty foods.”

LETTER #2: “How has the current economic situation affected your gluten free life style?

-”I will buy whatever it takes to be gluten-free and scrimp on other things. I don’t buy a lot of pre-packaged GF items, as I prefer to make my own. I try to stick with unprocessed foods anyway.

” Are there any changes in your shopping habits?

–No drastic changes, I’m used to buying unprocessed foods. I just spend longer reading labels.

“Do you eat out less often? Have there been any changes in your restaurant preferences?

–Yes, we eat out less and stick with the few restaurants I know will be tolerant of my needs.”
