Here is a copy of a letter that I received from one of our visitors who has lots of first-hand information about gluten free living in Pennsylvania:

“We live in the suburbs, west of Philadelphia, off the Route 422 corridor.  There is a locally owned store called Kimberton Whole Foods.  They have several locations in Kimberton, Downingtown, Douglassville and Ottsville, PA.  (They also recently announced a new 6,500 square foot warehouse in Lancaster county). I get a lot of items in bulk b/c I save an extra 10% (Quinoa pasta, for example).  They stock GF meals from Amy’s, Glutino, Ian’s.  Waffles from Van’s.  Many, many GF items to choose from including cereal, cookies, chips, supplements, dressings, beverages, meats, condiments, etc.

“Something KWF has that I had not seen at other locally owned health food stores (when we lived in VA) are products from local providers.  I love this b/c things are so fresh!  They use The Grainless Baker who makes a ton of breads (rolls, bagels, etc). Our favorite, Good Eatz makes really yummy baked items like cake, cookies and pies.  It’s so nice to be able to pick up fresh baked, special items for holidays, bdays, etc. for our son.  They also have opportunities to ‘meet the baker’ and such.  As a parent, I like being able to know the person behind the food, ask questions, hear about their commitment and love of what they do, etc.

“As for restaurants, over the past couple of years, we have found that the Applebees in Exeter Twnship is EXCELLENT at filling GF requests.  Outback Steakhouse in Wyomissing (west Reading) is also EXCELLENT (very knowledgeable servers—we discovered the manager’s wife is Celiac).  The Outback in Royersford, PA is so-so.  The servers aren’t as well educated on GF at this location.”
