The Gluten Free Guy Has Had a Long Month

Posted on 10:02 am by Gluten Free Guy

A long-time friend lost her battle with cancer recently so I spent time in the San Francisco Bay area. It was an important time, but certainly not relaxing. I came home to Portland, Oregon, for a hernia repair surgery that had been pre-planned. The surgery was easy; the only real problem has been the drugs that control the pain well but really scramble brains to the point where I have trouble typing and am really having a problem getting back on my schedule of blogging daily. We’ll see how this week goes.

One lesson I learned in the hospital: Celiacs having “short stay surgery” need to bring along something to eat while they are in the recovery room. I was groggy right after the surgery. Fortunately, my wife intervened to keep me from taking the crackers the nurses were offering me. They eventually found some yogurt.

Glenda Hall :

Hi, I want to offer my sympathy on the death of your friend. Since I don't know you, I am sorry I can't offer more words. I haven't been reading this site very long since I was diagnosed with Celiac in June this year. I am still trying very hard to become gluten free. I have maybe 4 pretty good days then 3 really bad days off and on. So I have had D. for 5 months now. I keep a food journal and I only buy what is in the Celiac food guide. I don't cheat on my diet. My G.I. Doc said it may take awhile and that the Endoscoy test did not reveal any Colitis, just Celiac. I am pretty frustrated and tired. The Doc prescribed Lomotil before every meal and at bedtime. When I follow this routine I get plugged up and bloated so I quit taking it just so I can get relief. But then that is accompanied by pain and cramping. So I take Bentyl for that. How do I ever get off this merry-go-round? Is this normal for newly dignosed Celiac's or for anyone with Celiac? Do I need to find another G.I. Specialist? My husband sees him because he was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease after 20 years of being told he had I.B.S.
Thank you for letting me vent. I hope I am not too forward in the dialogue.
