Confessions of an Overweight Celiac
Posted on 4:40 am by Gluten Free Guy
At least 30% of all celiacs are overweight at the time of their diagnosis. When I was diagnosed at age 61, I weighed less than I did in high school but that occurred only during the last 6 months of my pre-celiac existence. For the vast majority of my life, I have been overweight.
Several months ago I wrote an article titled “Gluten Free Weight Loss Diet”, in an effort to summarize the available facts. Today I will focus on my feelings and invite you to do the same. Please leave a comment at the end of this article or send me an e-mail at gfceliac@gmail.com. Anyway, here are my personal feelings on the subject:
The gluten free diet is hard enough to handle! I can’t even think about adding an additional diet. Weight loss diets are at least as complicated as the gluten free diet.. At least there is some consensus about what the gluten free diet involves. There are dozens of weigh loss diets around and some of them contradict each other.
Gluten free food tastes so much better than it did when I was first diagnosed.Gluten free food tastes great! Start over again, avoiding anything gluten toxic and/or high in calories???? I don’t think so!
Please share your thoughts with me and with our gluten free community. I’ll write a more positive and hopefully useful article as soon as possible. I realize that there are also celiacs who are trying to gain weight. I hope to hear from you as well.

Kristi :
I am also one of those overweight Celiacs. I've struggled with my weight and my health as long as I can remember (mom says about age 8 or so). Having said that, since I started the GF diet in Nov. 2007 and have better energy levels and things, my weight issue has started to improve without me really trying.
Maybe I do things a little different than most Celiacs, I don't know, but since we're a one income family until I get done with school, I've learned how to make about everything from scratch. We eat lots of veggies and fruits and I make my own breads and bakery goods (maybe once a month). I don't get too carried away with the GF commercial items, though we do buy them.
I'm not sure if my weight loss is due to the vast improvement in my energy levels or if it's because of the radical change in my diet, but either way, I had decided from the onset that I, also, wasn't going to make this more complicated than it had to be. I would just listen to my body and if it was hungry, I would feed it.
I wish the best of luck to others on the same path. I know it's tough, but we'll get where we're going soon enough.
