Gluten Free
Ancient Harvest Quinoa Flakes…a Product Review
08 May 2008
I enjoyed gluten free Ancient Harvest Quinoa Flakes as a breakfast cereal. The texture is excellent, and the “neutral taste” brings out the flavor in toppings such as fruit, preserves, or other items. (By the way, I am not saying the cereal itself was “tasteless”; that implies criticism of the cereal, and I actually enjoyed it very much. I just need something with a rather strong taste to wake me up in the morning.) I’m looking forward to trying the suggestion on the box to prepare the cereal with apple juice rather than water.
I then tried the cookie recipe that is on the package. Excellent! Both my non-celiac wife and I had a very unique reaction to these cookies: we loved them but were very happy to quit after eating one or two. Normally we finish the entire plate. Perhaps it was the high protein and fiber content of the quinoa; certainly it was a great thing for our waistlines.
Quinoa (keen-wa) flakes are free of gluten, milk products, egg, and soy. They are organic and kosher. Quinoa is “highest in protein of the world’s grains” and has 50% more fiber than wheat.
The package suggests that we exchange a portion of quinoa flakes for flour in our favorite gluten free recipes. I wish that these directions were more specific, but experimenting might well be worth the effort for anyone who wishes to add protein, fiber, and — above all — variety to a celiac disease diet.
