Gluten Free Licorice…a Product Review

Posted on 2:37 pm by Gluten Free Guy

My grandchildren and I enjoyed the gluten free licorice vines produced by Candy Tree, a Dutch firm, and available from The Gluten Free Mall. We sampled the cherry flavored vines as well as the black licorice variety, which get their flavor from anise. Raspberry and strawberry versions are also available.

These licorice vines are organic, milk free, and soy free and have no sugar added. The lack of sugar made them quite different from the licorice that I remember from my younger day, but they were certainly tasty. They are “chewier” than standard licorice — I'm not sure if that is an advantage or a disadvantage.

The celiac disease diet is difficult under the best of circumstances.  We are fortunate when we find a good tasting treat that is not noticeably different from what “everybody else is eating”. These licorice vines from Candy Tree fill a valuable place in my family's gluten free diet.
