Gluten Free Girl Scout Cookies
If Not Now, When?

1 Comment 14 January 2008

“If I was lord of the Celiac kingdom, my first decree would create a gluten free Girl Scout cookie. With the zillions of Girl Scout cookies that are produced each year, it would be financially feasible to introduce a new product which would be (or should be) of interest to their gluten free and wheat free customers. People need to be educated about the gluten free life style: what better audience than all the Girl Scouts in America, their leaders, their parents, and last-but-not-least their customers. It would also make bunches of money for the Girl Scout organization and bring many happy memories of pre-celiac diagnosis days.” I wrote that during last year’s cookie season and I wonder how many times I will have to repeat it before the Girl Scouts start paying attention.

This year I at least attracted some attention from my fellow bloggers. One person titled his or her article “Girl Scout Cookies — I Miss You my Friend”. That’s how I feel. I have many great sources for gluten free cookies; it’s the principle of the thing. Girl Scout cookies are a national ritual and I can’t participate. Oh sure, I can buy a few boxes, thus contributing to this worthy program, and then give the boxes away. But, …

I read a blog article titled “Lobbying for Gluten Free Girl Scout Cookies” and want to join glutenfreemom.com in her crusade. She suggests we start with the baker, whose e-mail address is abcbakers@interbake.com .  The article also includes her recipe for gluten free thin mints. I certainly intend to try this recipe. At the very least, I can use it to convince the Girl Scout higher-ups that a gluten free cookie is doable.
