Gluten Free Restaurants in New York City

3 Comments 07 January 2008

New York City has everything, including an impressive collection of celiac friendly restaurants, bakeries, and pizza places. Consider some of these opportunities:

Risoterria’s website emphasizes its gluten free opportunities, which include pasta, pizza and baked goods. I understand from various bloggers that the majority of the patrons are there to enjoy exquisite gluten free food, exchange ideas with fellow celiacs, and in general to enjoy their restaurant.

The Candle 79 Café posts its gluten free menu on-line and puts emphasis on its vegetarian and vegan opportunities.

The “Sex in the City” movie was filmed in part at  The Lumi Restaurant, an upscale Italian establishment that posts its gluten free menu on-line.

Lilli and Loo offers Chinese and Asian cuisine. Their gluten free menu is posted on-line and reminds us to use gluten free soy sauce. I’m not sure if that means that they supply celiac friendly soy sauce; it couldn’t hurt to carry a few single-serving packets in your pocket or purse wherever you visit.

Sambuca is a family style Italian restaurant that posts its gluten free menu on-line.

Peters Gourmet Diner apparently does not have a website but is mentioned on many of the best-known gluten free blogs. This blog contains great descriptions and photos. This blogger actually remembered to include the address, hours of operation, and phone number.

The Slice Pizzeria offers you the chance to build your own pizza and includes a gluten free rice pizza crust as one of its options. Obviously, there are cross contamination hassles here, but I thought you might like to know about this possibility.

Check out this article describing a celiac’s visit to New York City and the six safe havens that she discovered.

“Yelp” describes itself as describing “real reviews by real people”. Here is what these folks have to say about gluten free restaurants in New York City. I’m not sure how some of these reviewers determined that these places were celiac friendly, but their comments are certainly worth reading.

Thirteen restaurants in New York City have met the strict criteria of the Gluten Intolerance Group and qualified for placement on its list. This link will move you to the top of that list.

Well, there is my list. I hope I get back to the Big Apple to use it sometime soon. I was raised in upstate New York but my last visit was on New Years Eve 1962 as a young GI about to be sent overseas.  Times have changed!!!!

We specialize in bulk gluten-free items for Alaskans. We also offer low-cost cooking classes to help people along the way. Product information is available on our website as well as a cooking class schedule. Presently we do phone orders for pickup and ship to remote locations in Alaska.

    Hi,
My husband, who will be 73, was recently dx with celiac disease, which is becoming more and more common in older people. We rarely go to NYC, however, if you know of any restaurants in the Western Massachusetts area, we would appreciate know about them. Now, by “Western MA,” I DO NOT mean Springfield, or Worcester, they are CENTRAL MA. We live in Pittsfield, and do eat in both there and in Lenox, MA. If you have a list of restaurants in this area who serve gluten free entrees, we would value this information.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Carla Skidmore
