Gluten Free Living in Rhode Island

Posted on 8:46 pm by Gluten Free Guy

Rhode Island has more gluten free restaurants per square mile than anywhere else in the country. I can't prove that statement, but it definately seems right to me. As you may know, my goal is to write an article about each of the United States, and this is the first time I've had a restaurant list so long that it would be tedious for me to write and difficult for you to read. I think my best approach is to give you some links to four key resources and let you plan your own Rhode Island adventure.

The group Gluten Free Friends Rhode Island has identified 33 restaurants with gluten free menus and plans to dine out in each of these establishments. I'm sure that they would welcome guests and their site is a goldmine of information.

The Pinelli-Marra Restaurant Group operates nine gluten free restaurants in Rhode Island, all serving gluten free meals. The restaurants look fantastic. The website is great except for one foible: Pinelli and Mara have gone to great effort to create celiac friendly restaurants but don't bother to mention that fact on-line. When will chefs and web masters start talking to each other?

My information that these establishments are gluten free comes from The Gluten Free Restaurant Awareness Program (GFRAP), a branch of  the Gluten Intolerance Group, which publishes a state-by-state list of restaurants that meet the groups standards. Click here to read their Rhode Island list.

This list includes the Kabob and Curry Restaurant. I've been advised by a celiac Rhode Islander that that this same people manage a restaurant called Rosoi that features Indian cuisine and opportunities to dine gluten free.

The third major list is published by The American Celiac Family Support Group of Rhode Island. You'll find links to excellent celiac friendly restaurants (including one in Massachusetts). They also publish a list of stores that stock gluten free food. This list includes a link to Ursula's European Pastries, a highly recommended celiac ffiendly bakery.

Most of the major restaurant chains serve Rhode Island. Click here to find locations and gluten free options for 99 Restaurants, Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Chili's, Fresh City, Legal Seafood, Magginanos, On the  Border, Outback Steakhouse, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, PeiWei Asian Diner, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Ted's Montana Grill, and Uno Chicago Grill.

You can certainly find a lifetime supply of gluten free eating places in Rhode Island, but I imagine that your celiac adventure will take you to other states. My intention is prepare an article like this one for each and every state in our union. This will take time. I hope you'll look at the index to this site to see what I have accomplished.

I also need your suggestions to make these pages even more useful. What restaurants should I be including? Use the button at the top of the middle column to send me an e-mail. Also, gluten free restaurants have a way of appearing and disappearing. Let me know if there is anything anywhere on this site that needs to be corrected. Thanks.
