Celiacs need homemade gluten free bread. It provides variety and a delicious taste that can’t be duplicated (or even approached) by any store-bought bread. This article provides links to suggestion sheets that will help you prepare gluten free bread, specific recipes designed for use with a bread machine, and finally a recommendation for purchasing a bread machine that fulfils the unique requirements of gluten free bread making.
Ener-G Foods publishes this set of tips for gluten free baking in your bread machine. Celiac.com also publishes an information sheets. These hints are supplied by recipesource.com. The Gluten Free Pantry provides this article titled “The Bread Doctor” as well as this sheet of baking tips. Much of theinformation is repetitive, of course, but once you have skimmed through them you should be ready to proceed.
You will probably want to start with recipes that were put together with the idea that they would be used in bread machines. Bob’s Red Mill has posted a list of more than 40 appropriate recipes. They even have a recipe for Walrus Bread; I’m eager to find out what that is. Celiac.com provides a recipe titled simply “Bread Recipe for Bread Machine” as well as a recipe for “Fabulous Herb and Olive Loaf”.
You’ll need a heavy duty bread machine. Our bread dough tends to be thick and sticky. Your machine will be well-used; the entire family will appreciate the homemade bread much more than the store-bought variety. You’ll need a programmable machine; gluten free bread generally only has to rise once. Automatic machines program in two risings. You won’t need a timer. Regarding the X-20 Breadmaker…How much does it weigh and can it make one loaf at a time? Are there shipping charges?
Thanks for this advice, one of my family has just been diagnosed but I always make bake bread for her, hopefully I can carry on that tradition just with gluten-free recipes now!
