Gluten Free Restaurants in Maine

16 Comments 10 July 2007

First of all, be assured that boiled lobster is gluten free. There may be complications if your lobster is broiled or if it is stuffed with anything. I’m sorry that I am not able to make any specific recommendations here. I hope that some of you will be able to supply information that I can add to this article.

Here are some more ideas about gluten free dining in Maine:

The Outback Steakhouse provides its usual great food, wonderful service, great atmosphere, and gluten free menu at its restaurant in South Portland ().

The Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, my choice for America’s most cleverly titled restaurant chain, has dinner ready for you in Bangor (207-945-5515) as well as in South Portland (207-5400).

And don’t forget Uno’s Chicago Grill, located in Bangor (207-947-5000) and in South Portland (207-780-8667). Click here to read their suggestions for those living gluten free. After you click on this page, scroll down to the middle of the second column to access the information you need.

The 99 Restaurants chain serves family style meals in Bangor (207-973-1999), Augusta (207-623-0999), Auburn (207-784-9499), Topsham (207-725-4999), and Biddeford (207-283-9999). Click here for their list of foods that contain gluten or allergens. Be aware that there are relatively few gluten free items. But if you consult this list ahead of time, you can certainly enjoy a gluten free meal in any of these locations.

Maine offers abundant opportunities — in the mountains or at the seashore — for exquisite picnics. Do your shopping at Hannafords Supermarket; they publish a gluten free list that is generic enough to use at almost any grocery store.

I hope you enjoy New England as much as I do!

The good news here is that fish and lobster are naturally gluten free. All we need to worry about is how the seafood is prepared. I’m sure that appropriate places exist, but they are not advertised on the net. If you discover any “safe” places, please let me know so that I can update this article.

North Star cafe on Congress Street offers many gluten free Sandwiches, Soups and Salads, Desserts, etc…

Try Fresh! in South Portland. This is a small, fabulous restautant that will modify their menu to be gluten free. For example, if you want to try one of their dishes that’s served over pasta, they’re happy to serve it over spinach instead. And it’s much healther that way! They’re open for lunch and dinner.

Another suggestion is Flatbread Pizza in Old Port. While they don’t show it on the menu, they can prepare a flatbread with gluten-free dough instead of the usual dough. It’s not quite the same, but it’s still good and it’s a great place to take guests.

I hear North Star Cafe on Congress St in Portland (near the intersection w/ Washington) has some great GF options. In Brunswick, there is WildFlour bakery, with the best homemade food with no GF aftertaste. Yummy.

Davids in Portland (Call ahead to prepare menu)
Also the the front room in portland (call ahead to prepare menu)
the chefs at these two restaurants are great about preparting a delicious gluten free menu

Try Mark Antony’s Italian in Wiscasset-they have a variety of gluten free italian meals, pizzas, and parmigiana (gluten free crumbs used). I’ve had people with me tell me they actually think the gluten-free preparations are better than regular!! Also great wines. NOTE: Since the restaurant says nothing about gluten free food on its site I have e-mailed the restaurant asking for confirmation.

In Brunswick, there’s the Great Impasta. Great handmade pastas and bread. Gluten free appitizers, entrees, and even dessert!! Can’t say enough good things!

  9. Carolyn says:

Becky’s Diner on Commercial St in Portland provides a delicious gluten-free bread. I enjoyed a fabulous breakfast there recently and they’re “plain” homefries are gluten free too. Friendly & quick service, great food and reasonably prices as well. Highly recommended!

Silly’s, Washington Ave, Portland; Foreside Tavern and Ricetta’s, Falmouth; Pat’s Pizza, Yarmouth and the Mediterranean GRill, Freeport all have Gluten free options.

Portland Pie Company (pizza/italian food) is in portland and scarborough. They have amazing gluten free pizza dough and they have a gluten free sauce and cheese. Tasted so good – very attentive staff to allergy needs as well. Also, Dimillo’s on the waterfront in Old Port claimed to be gluten free and allergy friendly, but when my food came I knew right away that they made a mistake. They didnt even care that they gave me food with gluten and dairy (other allergy of mine). I also had a good experience at the Ruby Tuesday’s in South Portland by the Maine MALL. The manager came over to clarify my needs and they cooked my meal to order as I requested. Hope this helps others when in the area.

AJ’s Woodgrill Pizza in Kittery (Wallingford Square) has amazing gluten free pizza. They also have GF wraps on the menu, and have GF cookies and brownies. I highly recommend them.

My favorite place for GF is Wildflours in Brunswick. They make yummie millet oat bread. I love the moist raspberry coconut muffins and have ordered my own birthday cake there – chocolate with ganache filling and raspberry preserves on top and it was delicious! Small, charming & friendly place with knowledgable staff. Their also on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wildflours-Gluten-Free-Market-and-Bakery/42788924612

Henry & Marty’s in Brunswick, right across from the health food store on Main Street, is a great option for dinner! I have many, many dietary restrictions and the chef there was very accomodating when I called in advance, promised me he’d create me a delicious dinner, and he even came out of the kitchen after I’d started my meal to be sure it was alright. It was very yummy and made my brithday out the best in years! I’ve been back for a repeat performance and it was just as good the 2nd time. So nice to be able to dine out again!!
