Gluten Free Communion

Gluten free communion wafers are available from Ener-G Foods. You can also order through local retailers.
These same wafers can be purchased from St. Patrick's Guild. The most important difference is that this site includes the disclaimer these gluten free breads are not approved by the Catholic Church.
An organization called Celiac Catholics is very concerned about the issue gluten free communion in the Roman Catholic Church. Their site includes five articles on the subject. Celiac Catholics are concerned about the wafers themselves and the fact that wafers are dipped in a common wine challis. Here's an article from the University of Chicago that discusses the same issues.
This article discusses "low gluten altar breads" that are acceptable in the Roman Catholic Church. It deals with both religious and dietary issues. The breads can be ordered on-line.
As far as I know, this problem does not exist in non-Catholic congregations. If I am mistaken here — or if you have other information that should be included in this article — please leave a comment below or e-mail me at gfceliac@gmail.com
