Gluten Free Restaurants in Vermont

5 Comments 25 May 2007

UPDATED 6/12/07   I’ll be vacationing in Vermont this fall, and as always will be living gluten free. And so I am attempting to write a series of articles; hopefully the "homework" that will do prior to my vacation will be useful to you.  I‘ve already posted an article “Discovering Gluten Free Boston” and last week I added “Gluten Free Restaurants in New England”. You may want to read one or both of them before you proceed.

I was able to pinpoint two specific restaurants in Vermont that provide gluten free options. Both are located in South Burlington. I’ll give you phone numbers in case you need directions; you can get more specific information on the internet. The Outback Steak House’s number is (802)862-0003. Contact Uno Chicago Grill at (802)865-4000. You may wish to copy and carry with you the Outback’s gluten free menu and Grill’s list of gluten free items.

Chili’s and Wendy’s are probably also available. However, you need to key in a specific zip code in order to find restaurant locations and I was unable to find phone numbers. Both Chili’s and Wendy’s publish gluten free foods lists. I recommend that you copy them and carry them with you. Remember that Chili’s list is upgraded monthly.

UPDATED 6/12/07 Your New England adventure will probably take you outside the great state of Vermont. You may wish to check out my articles on gluten free restaurants in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. I’ve also written articles titled "Gluten Free Restaurants in New England" and "Exploring Gluten Free Boston". I’m planning a New England vacation this fall and am anxious to share the "homework" I’ve done with as many celiacs as possible.

Since I began working on this blog, I have found out that many restaurants and bakeries go to great effort to offer gluten free choices and then do not mention that fact on their website. Apparently, chefs and webmasters do not always communicate. I suspect that this is true in areas like Vermont. I need to rely on “spies”. If you have any information that belongs on this blog, please e-mail me at gfceliac@gmail.com.

Here are a few Burlington suggestions:
We go to Souza’s regularly and have had great success. They are at the corner of Main St and St-Paul (moved up from lower on Main street). It’s a Brazilian rodizio style restaurant and the chef/owner is very knowledgeable. The bread that comes to the table is already gluten free being pao de queso (chebe) and the meats they pass around are all simple and GF. They have a huge salad bar with lots of seafood and the owner pointed out that one of the salads had wheat in it (taboule), the rest were fine. They use manioc flour and crumbs on some items. It is pricey in the evening (around $40/pp) so we tend to take our 2 celiac boys for Sunday brunch, though they recently opened for lunch too at I think $12.95/pp. The only non-GF desert there is brownies, the rest are okay.

Where Souza’s used to be is now Big Fatty’s BBQ and though I can’t vouch for the flavour as we haven’t been yet, I have been in contact with the owner/chef and their sauce (therefore meat) is GF.

We’ve been succesful at Roque’s at the end of Main St near the water as well, where they make their own corn tortillas and fry them in separate oil as chips. Most of their sauces are not Okay, though their salsa is. My kids like the tacos and nachos. They can also provide you with corn instead of wheat tortillas for the fajitas.

For groceries, Healthy Living is a staple and we just got another great store in Essex called Sweet Clover Market.

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let locals in Vermont know that Tilley’s Cafe offers many gluten free options. We are located at the bottom of Church St in Burlington VT. Check out our website and see our great options (diamonds mark the gluten free menu items and squares mark vegetarian items).

    Thanks!

The Skinny Pancake has buckwheat batter; therefore, they have a gluten-free selections galore. I have not tried it yet, but will soon. Located at the Waterfront in Burlington. NOTE: the existence of buckwheat batter does not guarantee that anything is actually gluten free. I e-mailed Skinny Pancake on 10/04/09. I’ll let you know when I get a response.

I’ve been very successful over time with VT Soup Company/Alex’s Restaurant on Williston Road is S. Burlington. Their Chili, Corn Chowder, Maple Pumpkin Bisque, and often one or two more soups are thickened with cornstarch. Chef is looking for a substitute for HVP for the others, so they can become GF too. I often order the warm veggie wrap [without the wrap]. This is food that knows where it came from, fresh and delicious. They are respectful of the GF needs. I’ve been a customer for at least 7 years, 2 of which as a celiac.

I’ve also been successful at Longhorn, although seem to react to the salads or salad dressings when I order. So avoid that. Otherwise, steak and sweet potato or baked potato work well for me. ~ Rb

Simon Pearce in Quechee, VT doesn’t have a gluten free menu but they understand what gluten free is and are more than accommodating; they actually care about serving you an outstanding gluten-free meal.
