Gluten Free
Gluten Free Dining in and Around Denver, Colorado
12 April 2007
The Denver recently published a great article “Area Caters to Gluten Free Palates” which includes at least 20 recommendations for eating gluten free in Denver and the surrounding area. I’ve requested the newspaper’s permission to republish it on my site, but I suggest that you click on the title to download it now. Newspaper archives often do not remain on-line for very long.

Deby’s Gluten Free Bakery and Café (yes, I spelled the name correctly) is probably the most widely recommended celiac friendly establishment in the area. There are branches in Denver, Highlands Ranch. Erie, and even as far away as Casper, Wyoming. I have eaten some of the great foods they distribute on-line. I wonder how they’ll taste fresh from the source.
Beau Jo’s Colorado Style Pizza has six locations in Colorado and uses pizza crust supplied by Deby’s Gluten Free Bakery and Café. The link will take you directly to their gluten free menu.
Wholly Tomato will prepare any of their fine sandwiches on gluten free soda bread.
The Rheinlander Bakery has a dedicated facility for preparing their gluten free products. They also package mixes that they refer to as “Bake it Yourself Cakes”. I like that attitude!
Abrusci’s claims to serve “the best damned Italian food…period”. All that plus a gluten free menu — what else could we ask for?
Twenty restaurants in the Denver area qualified for the Gluten Intolerance Groups Gluten Free Restaurants Program. Click here for complete information. P.F. Changs has four locations in the area; gluten free dining is always available there.
Denver looks like a great place to live gluten free. Someday I hope to experience these restaurants in person rather than depending on the internet for information. I’d love to hear from people who have actually experienced these places as well as those who have other places to recommend.

I just wanted to let people know about Udi’s Gluten Free line and Denver based Cafes. Their gluten free line includes, two types of breads, these breads believe it or not taste like actual food. These breads don’t fall apart when you look at them, or have to be slathered and smothered in anything just to taste like real food. The breads have a great consistency and go well with any kind of sandwich.
If it is more then bread that you are looking for I would recommend the cinnamon rolls, just like the ones your grandma used to make. These are gooey again tasting like real food, the cinnamon is distrubuted through out the roll and has the just the right amount of frosting that makes the rolls perfect. All you have to do is warm them up for a few minutes in the microwave or oven and you are good to go.
If you thought the cinnamon rolls sounded good wait until you try the muffins, both blueberry and lemon strusel. These are perfect in the morning with cereal and juice or tea, Both have a nice consistancy and create a nice mood for a snack,
All of these can be found in the freezer section in King Soopers these products should be kept frozen because they do not have preservatives and that is the best way to keep them fresh tasting. If you want more information about these products and the Udi’s Cafes log onto http://www.udisfood.com/.
Amanda,
I’m sorry but I MUST disagree about Udi’s gluten-free line. I’ve not tried their breads, but their muffins and cinnamon rolls were HORRIBLE. The texture was too dense, there was ONE blueberry in each muffin, there was no flavor in the batter, and it was far too sweet. I’d recommend buying GF boxed muffins and making them yourself, then freezing them yourself.
I work for a restaurant group in Denver that owns duo in the Highlands neighborhood, Olivéa in Uptown and Cafe Colore in Writer’s Square. Each restaurant has a gluten free menu available, and all of Cafe Colore’s pizzas and pasta can be made gluten free.

Best gluten free pizza in Denver.
Very unique.
Basil Doc’s Pizza is a Denver Institution.
Established in 1996.
I recently had the Gluten Free Pizza at Cafe Colore. It was best I have had. It was everything that I have been missing in pizza crust. Thanks Brooke for the recommendation!
I just went to La Creperie Cafe at the southlands mall off of Aurora Pkwy in Aurora. I had been by this cafe and thought grumpily that there would be no way I could ever eat there. Happily, I can and this food is to DIE for. The chef comes to your table, prepares wonderful crepes made with buckwheat. She was very knowledgeable about cross contamination and since she creates all her sauces from scratch, she knows exactly what is in them. She adjusts the recipe to accommodate celiacs and the food is heaven. my favorite is the shrimp in a tomato bisque wine sauce, the pear/brie crepe and of course the chocolate, strawberry and banana dessert crepe.
Just want to drop a quick note to tell you all about Mermaids Bakery on 15th and Champa in downtown Denver. They have a really amazing line up of Gluten Free cake and cupcakes. They made my kid a super mario brothers birthday cake, it was chocolate and no one at the party could tell it was gluten free, until i told them! They could not believe it was gluten free!

Just wanted to let our gluten free eaters and readers know that Mici Handcrafted Italian now serves gluten free pizza at both of our locations! Come in and try the fantastic crust. The feedback we have received regarding the authentic taste has been incredible from our gluten free Mici customers. Pick up, Dine in, or Delivery at either our downtown store or cherry creek north locations. NOTE: The menu does not specifically state that gluten free pizza is available. I have e-mailed the restaurant asking for confirmation of their gluten free status on 1/07/10. When this confirmation is received, I will move this restaurant’s information to the main part of the article.
Does anyone know of a gluten free tappanyaki restaurant? My husbands birthday is next week and he would love it if we could find a gluten free place to go. Please let me know. Thank you!
Just wanted to add about Udi’s Bakery…their pizza crusts are amazing. Take them and make your own pizza at home and you will never go out for pizza again!
Do you have a disclaimer somewhere in here that makes you feel ok recommending restaurant as “Gluten Free” when they all seem to have dishes that have flour in them? These places HAVE TO HAVE cross-contamination if the kitchen has been used to prepare food containing any wheat, rye, bulgur, etc. Gluten does not leave pans when they are washed…
Wow You did a really good job on this thing.
General Mills will be coming out with a Gluten Free Bisquick in June/July!!!
You will absolutely LOVE this product, it makes fantastic pancakes and waffles. They are light and don’t have a grainy taste.
It also makes flaky coating on chicken to make chicken strips……again the BEST texture you have had with no underlying flavors that you have to try and cover up.
I cannot say enough about the box I got to try……..I CAN BARELY WAIT UNTIL JUNE TO BUY IT……buy it and you won’t be disappointed!!
I agree about the Udi’s — there bread IS amazing. Nice soft consistency. I hightly recommend everyone try their bread. BUT, their muffins and pasteries are horrible! Icky, dry. Not worth putting in your belly.
I also agree about Udi’s Bread….It is FANTASTIC! Best on the market….and we all have tried so many! Glad to have finally found one.
Pasquini’s: They have gluten free options. The first time we went there they did well, last night my friend got sick. When I told them about they said while they have gluten free options, they don’t attempt to make sure there is no cross-contamination. So stay away.
Lil Ricci’s in Parker& in Highland’s Ranch have a gluten free menu.
Lala’s Wine Bar + Pizzeria has a gluten-free menu.
Little Ollie’s in Cherry Creek was very accommodating and knowledgeable.
Try The Comfort Cafe–a non-profit, gluten free restaurant.

I have eaten twice at the Crepes en Crepes located on the mile in Denver. The food was delicious and I had absolutely no side effects, The service was great and the staff very knowledgeable. Would definately recommend.
Fat Sully’s Pizza on Colfax (in the Atomic Cafe bar) is by far the best GF bar pizza. He makes his own dough that he told me is heavily flax flour based with some other stuff. It’s perfect when fresh out of the oven and just a little chewy when it cools off. The flavor is fantastic and their pie is a great “standard” pizza. By far the best GF pizza I’ve had anywhere including Basil Docs (soggy crust with little flavor), Beau Jo’s (it’s okay), and 5 other places that just offer a packaged rice flour crust that’s only acceptable if you don’t have other choices.
