Gluten Free Memorial Day

Mr. Spice Garlic Gluten-Free Steak Sauce

The Memorial Day weekend is the beginning of  picnic and barbeque season in most parts of the country. Since there are few if any specifically “Memorial Day recipes”, I’ll focus on more general concerning about gluten free eating in the great outdoors.

Most condiments and salad dressings (including mayonnaise) may cause concern for the gluten free. The majority of experts feel that mustard, ketchup, salad dressing is “legal” even if made with distilled vinegar, but there is some disagreement on this point so you may wish to check out my post Vinegar in the Gluten Free Diet. If you are concerned about the vinegar issue, I suggest you order on-line from The Gluten Free Mall. I placed a picture of a jar of their delicious gluten free steak sauce at the top of the page. Click on the picture to go directly to the ordering page or click on this banner to explore other opportunities.
Gluten-Free Foods

Beer is featured at many picnics and barbecues and Anheuser Bush has recently introduced Redbridge Beer, made from sorghum rather than wheat, delicious, and somewhat less expensive than other gluten free beers. Click here to see my post on the subject.

You will need hamburger and hotdog buns. You have four options here:

  • Bake your own. Here is a link to Gluten Free Utah which includes both a recipe and  information about how to get correctly shaped baking pans. Click here for the recipe published by Celiac.com.
  • Buy them locally. Ener-G Foods and Kinnikinnick produce excellent buns and rolls. The links will lead you to information about where the products are sold in your area
  • Buy them on-line. Here again, Ener-G Foods and Kinnikinnick are great sources. These links will take you to the appropriate place to complete your order.
  • Order them frozen. The Gluten Free Mall makes this possible. Click on the package of hamburger buns pictured at the end of this post. Be sure to pay close attention to their ordering instructions. Ordering one or two items is prohibitively expensive. The page clearly explains the procedure for ordering in quantity thus making shipping charges reasonable.
  • Gillian's Foods Gluten-Free Plain French Rolls/Hamburger & Sandwich Buns
