My Gluten Free Wish List Part 1: a Celiac-friendly Girl Scout Cookie

3 Comments 24 February 2007

If I was lord of the Celiac kingdom, my first decree would create a gluten free Girl Scout cookie. With the zillions of Girl Scout cookies that are produced each year, it would be financially feasible to introduce a new product which would be (or should be) of interest to their celiac and wheat free customers. People need to be educated about the gluten free life style: what better audience than all the Girl Scouts in America, their leaders, their parents, and last-but-not-least their customers. It would also make bunches of money for the Girl Scout organization and bring many happy memories of pre-celiac diagnosis days. I have several other ideas for my Gluten Free Wish List — stay tuned! I’d also like to publish some of your ideas. Use the COMMENT button at the bottom of this post or e-mail me at gfceliac@gmail.com

I think a GF Girl Scout cookie is a wonderful idea. There is a huge audience and it would be a great way to spread the word about Celiac Disease and gluten-free.

My gluten-free wish is to walk into any Italian restaurant and be served warm, gluten-free garlic knots dripping in olive oil and garlic. YUM!

It seems to me that a suggestion to the Girl Scouts to meet our needs must also meet their needs. That is: Gluten free cookies would have to be sold at the same price as all the others. As the system works now, Girl Scout leaders and members account for cookies by the box, with the variety not being too important for accounting purposes. To sell Gluten free cookies at a higher price would disrupt the system. Further, the Girl Scouts award contracts from time to time and I’m guessing that most of those cookie bakers also produce a huge variety of gluten containing products for the many private labels they bake for. And lastly, as a ex Girl Scout cookie junkie, I know a variation in ingredients would lead to a variation in taste.
