Gluten Free Laxatives, Stool Softeners, and Fiber Supplements

Celiacs and "outsiders" have many common basic needs, and these needs are as basic as any. But before I continue, I should remind you of the obvious fact that anyone whose sensitivities manifest themselves in the intestinal tract should think carefully before using laxatives, stool softeners, and fiber supplements. Expert medical advice may be appropriate. That being said, here is some information for those who may need it:

  • Here's a statement from the Phillips website which deals with its laxatives and stool softeners: “We do not add any gluten to our Phillips' products. However, we cannot guarantee they are 100% gluten free due to raw materials processed by outside vendors.”
  • Senokot declares on its website that all of its products are gluten free. The possibly bad news here is that I am talking about the Canadian site; the American site does not deal with the subject at all. I'll let you draw your own conclusions from this information.
  • Metamucil declares that fiber supplement powders and capsules are gluten free. The wafers are not appropriate for our diet.
  • The FiberChoice company makes this simple and direct statement about its fiber supplements: "FiberChoice supplement does not contain any wheat by-products or gluten".
