These three restaurant chains may be thought of as “the celiac’s best friends”. You can find them almost anywhere in the country, they provide gluten free food, and serve excellent food and provide great service. “The Outback Steakhouse” and “P.F. Chang’s China Bistro” have gluten free menus that you can read in the restaurant or copy off the internet. Chili’s provides a list of specific suggestions for its gluten free customers (you can read and/or copy that list on the internet).
The Outback Steakhouse and its affiliates have blessed the celiac community by providing a wheat and gluten free menu (prepared by the Gluten Intolerance Group), great food, outlets nationwide, and wonderful atmosphere. Enjoy the Outback Steakhouse, but first print out their gluten free menu. The main issue at the Outback is the seasoning used on most of their vegetables. The problem can be easily overcome, and the gluten free menu will tell you exactly how. My solution: order a sweet potato — they are delicious and gluten friendly. These restaurants serve delicious up-scale oriental food in restaurants throughout the nation. They feature a gluten free menu as well as waiters who are very aware of our needs. I recall one feast which ended with a wonderful but completely flourless chocolate cake; the waiter was contentious enough to say that he could not absolutely guarantee its gluten free purity because it had been prepared off the premises. Chili’s publishes a list of items that are appropriate for its wheat free/gluten free patrons. It also makes the very sensible recommendation that people with anyone with any type of food sensitivity avoid fried foods since they are aware that cross-contamination occurs. Beware of Texas Land and Cattle!!! Staff are not trained to follow Gluten Free Menu guidelines. I actually had them create my meal incorrectly, and someone “pulled off” the top layer of offending items, leaving the entire plate contaminated. Manager told me that if I could explain to him how to make my food, he would do it for me. Don’t risk it!!
