St. Patrick’s day revolves delicious food and great beer. Fortunately, both are readily available for those living wheat and/or gluten free. You have several choices of great beer:

Redbridge is produced Anheuser-Busch and sorghum is used in its preparation. Since Redbridge is produced by a major American brewer, you have an excellent chance of finding it at a reasonable price. Click on the word Redbridge to find a location and enjoy the brew.

A wonderful honey lager beer is produced at the Ramapo Valley Brewery. There are a few local distributors, and it is available on-line.

Bard’s Tale Beer is produced by fermenting sorghum and is my personal favorite.

Be sure to scroll down to read the comment from The Lakefront Brewery recommending New Grist Beer as well as the Schlafly and Dark Hills microbreweries. Since I have no personal experience with these brews, I’ll just include their web addresses and let you be the judge. Let me know how they taste. I welcome comments — gluten free products are hard to find!

You’ll need some great Irish food and recipes are only a few mouse-clicks away. My first recommendation is Recipezaar’s collection of 35 Gluten free St. Patrick’s Day recipes. Their corn beef and cabbage is wonderful. Bob’s Red Mill publishes a great recipe for Irish Soda Bread. and clicking on the words Irish Stew will lead you to the great Irish stew recipe you’ve always dreamed of.

  1. There are actually many more choices for gluten-free beer, including New Grist, the gluten-free beer from Milwaukee that has always been reasonably priced and nationally available. As for taste, it was the Gold Medal Winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival in the Experimental Beer Category competing against 37 other “regular” beers. New Grist was the first gluten-free beer allowed to be called “Beer” by the U.S. Government. Bard’s is fine beer, as is Ramapo, Schlafly and Dark Hills. These are Gluten-Free microbrews produced with care and attention for celiac friends and family. We’re happy that there are now more options than ever for celiacs we will continue to innovate and produce the best tasting beers in the world. We urge celiacs to demand quality g/f products anywhere and everywhere they go.
